Julie N. Books played clarinet in the Mt. Vernon High School Marching and Symphonic Bands that won 1st place in symphonic and 3rd place in marching at the 1986 Festival of States National Competition in St. Petersburg, Florida. Here is a list of the awards won by that band from 1985 to 1987 when Julie played clarinet during her junior year (1st chair, 2nd part) and senior year (2nd chair, 1st part). Thanks to Patrice Murane, the best drum major, and to all the talented musicians that made that band the best high school band in Virginia and better than many college bands. Julie also played in the District Ten Symphonic Band in 1987 and took some clarinet lessons with Lora Ferguson at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.
